Environmental Chemicals Management
Cambodia has experienced significant sectoral economic growth in agriculture, industry, and health, leading to increased chemical use over the past decade. However, the country lacks a centralized system for chemical data collection and management, resulting in challenges in ensuring public health and environmental safety. Since signing the Stockholm Convention on POPs in 2001, Cambodia has committed to improving chemical management with international support, including assistance from the UNEP and UNITAR. The National Profile on Chemicals Management was developed using existing data from various institutions, covering the entire chemical life cycle. Despite regulatory frameworks and inter-ministerial committees overseeing chemical management, gaps remain in institutional capacity, data reliability, human resources, and laboratory infrastructure. Additionally, public awareness of chemical risks is low, and coordination among stakeholders is limited. These challenges hinder effective chemical regulation, monitoring, and accident prevention, highlighting the need for improved cooperation, data collection, and technical capacity. The Chemical and waste was enforce and implementation by department of hazardous substances management (DHSM)/ General Directorate Environmental Protection/ Ministry of Environment.
